Chapter Six

Like every night since he’d returned home, Narith lay in bed unable to sleep, holding his bedmate in his arms. This time, he felt contentment and nothing else, because he held Mac, his pet—his sometimes confusing, but always transparent human. There was no guile in the boy, no artifice. That’s what made him so very different from Orianna or Rone or any Travian, really. The boy was mad at the way Narith treated him, yet still wanted to be his pet, and he had the courage to say it. Well, show it anyway. He’d surprised Narith entirely by jumping into his arms just when Narith had resigned himself to an awkward evening in his quarters. Chambers. And wasn’t it telling that he thought in terms of being on board the ship? He longed to be back with Captain Kell and the other males he served with. He needed to be useful and in a way different from catering to his mate. Life here didn’t suit him. He knew that now with certainty. Having lived within the majesty of space, being dirtside held no further allure for him.

Neither, frankly, did his mate, much as he would have liked it to be otherwise. She deserved to be appreciated far more than he did. He didn’t want her passionately enough, nor was he properly interested in her life. He did her a disservice by staying and pretending he felt differently. The honorable thing to do was to confess to her as gently as he could manage that their mating didn’t suit him—a failing on his part, no doubt. He should beg her forgiveness and for a release from their mating then wish her well with Rone and the child he’d given her. He’d come to the realization that this was how their life together would always have played out. The only difference would have been that a child should have roamed the world, carrying his scent—a child he would have loved with all his being. But he never would have made a good mate for Orianna long-term.

He gazed down at the strange and beautiful head of red hair, so unlike any Travian’s. Such an exotic creature, his pet, and yet the moment he’d held this human in his arms, it had felt like the most natural fit in the universe, as if they’d been made for each other. A silly thought perhaps, but still true. It hadn’t been because of loneliness or novelty, either. He knew that for a certainty since coming home and lying with his mate again. Being with Mac was unique…and perfect. If he could only return to space with Mac in his arms, life would be just the way he wanted it. Spurning Orianna, though—no matter how he went about it—would have disastrous results. He cringed inwardly at how his mother would react to such a thing. A good son didn’t go against his mother’s wishes or act against his family’s interest.

He remained trapped in a situation that for the life of him he couldn’t see a way out of without causing great harm to others.
